In 2006 Perry & Caroline purchased 11 acres of land in Screven County about 5
miles from Perry's new job - also about 10 miles from where his brother lives
& about 15 from his parents. The plan was to get power & water to the site,
start planting trees & doing other site work, build a barn (about half as big
as the one in Jenkins County), & finally build a house. All of this was
contingent on
selling their house & cottage in Jenkins County, of course, & on
finding buyers who'd work with us to make the transition somewhat sane.
Fast forward to the end of 2008:
The cottage has now been sold to a quiet, polite gentleman who LOVES the place
and
is already sprucing up its paint job & weeding its yards, making it look even
better than new!
The house
is still on the market -- which has yet to recover from a housing price slump
that
started just about the time we decided to sell our houses.
Perry & Caroline are now living in a tiny but efficient & comfortable apartment
tucked into one end of a large, substantial metal storage building on the
Screven County property. Perry has dubbed this building "The Roost" (in honor
of the Georgia Southern Eagles & Screven County HS Fighting Cocks). Its
upstairs now houses much of Perry's &
Caroline's belongings that had
been in use or on display in the Jenkins County house & cottage.
The half of
the
downstairs that isn't used for housing is divided into 3 bays for use as a
workshop for Perry. The new cottage is still on hold, but in addition to the
storage building, there's also a pump house (which actually just houses the
water tank, not the pump itself) -- we now intend to use it to store poultry
feed, but we call it the "Garden Shed." There's also a fenced garden space
with a tool shed (where many of Caroline's power & hand tools for gardening &
yard work are stored), 2 chicken houses, a duck house, & a fenced poultry yard.
As we get them prepared, links from this page
will take visitors to a few photos documenting our progress to date & maybe
some info on future plans; so do return!
